Xaverian is a Catholic, college-preparatory school for boys in grades 7-12.
By helping each young man develop his unique gifts and talents, Xaverian empowers servant leaders who are ready to answer God's call to contribute to an ever-evolving world.

August 31, 1963
The Xaverian Brothers provincial Brother Gilroy, C.F.X., the first principal, Brother Marcellus, C.F.X., and Cardinal Cushing officiated at the dedication ceremony for the new Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood. -
1963-1966
Brother Marcellus Feeley, C.F.X. serves as Xaverian’s first principal. Brother Marcellus was the last Xaverian Brother to be the principal of Mission Church High School, where the school originated. -
December 1966
Xaverian wins first state championship in football and goes on to win seven more (in 1967, 1986, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2009), and would also win state championships in golf, baseball, lacrosse, swimming, alpine skiing, cross country, outdoor and indoor track becoming a powerhouse in Massachusetts sports. -
June 12, 1967
Xaverian’s first Commencement takes place. The Class of 1967 includes veteran teachers Phil Penza ’67 and Denis Smith ’67. The valedictorian Richard Czaja ’67 enrolls at Yale University, starting a long tradition of Xaverian graduates at elite colleges and universities. -
1969-1970
The school council successfully proposes that the requirement to wear a tie be excluded from the dress code. -
1970-1984
Brother William Drinan, C.F.X. serves as Xaverian’s headmaster. -
1971-1972
The eight-period schedule is introduced, along with the academic centers, giving students the flexibility to receive help on specific subjects and also learn how to successfully manage their time. -
1971-1972
Chuck Berry and Sha Na Na both play at Xaverian, starting a long history of major rock stars performing at Xaverian. -
1976-1977
The Xaverian Leadership Institute (XLI) is founded, giving seniors the opportunity to participate in a five-day servant leadership retreat with their classmates before entering into their final year at Xaverian. The first year the program was held, it took place in the classrooms at Xaverian with less than 20 students. Today, after four decades, the program attracts more than 150 students annually and is a cornerstone of the Xaverian experience. -
1977-1978
The Campus Ministry Department officially begins. While the school has always had a chaplain, this is the first year that staff members are assigned to work full-time as campus ministers, developing retreat and service programs for all students. -
February 6, 1978
The Blizzard of ’78 begins. The school is closed for two weeks as a result of the mammoth snowstorm. -
March 13, 1978
The J. Geils Band performs a concert at Xaverian. -
1991-2016
Mr. Domenic Lalli serves as the first lay principal of Xaverian Brothers High School. -
1994-1995
Although Advanced Placement (AP) courses have been offered for many other courses since the beginning of Xaverian’s history, this is the first year that the AP Art course is offered, reflecting the expanding Fine and Performing Arts program. Today, Xaverian offers 21 AP courses. -
1996-1997
Xaverian in action (X-ACT) begins, a student initiated organization that facilitates weekly service programs in the local community. The program starts, following XLI, when Eric Weindorf ’97 wants to create opportunities for students to participate in regular service trips. -
April 18–19, 1998
Matt Hasselbeck ’93 is selected by the Green Bay Packers in the sixth round of the 1998 NFL Draft. The long tradition of athletic success goes beyond Xaverian, with many graduates going on to play at colleges and universities with outstanding athletic programs and several playing professionally, including, James Bailey ’75, Mark Young ’77, Dana Barros ’85, Joe Fleming ’90, Greg Comella ’93, Matt Hasselbeck ’93, Tim Hasselbeck ’96, Drew Strojny ’99, Chris Wagner ’09, and Mo Hurst ’12. -
2000-2001
The Campus Ministry Department starts SpiritHawk, the weekly, student-facilitated faith-sharing meeting. The program starts small and expands rapidly, initiated by original leaders: Peter Quaranto ’02, Andy Sweeney ’02, Matt Costantino ’02, and Joe Imparato ’02. Today, more than 100 students attend every week. -
2002-2003
The Peer Ministry program begins, run by the Campus Ministry Department, facilitating mentorship opportunities between upperclassmen and freshmen. -
September 2003
The varsity field and stadium and baseball field are renovated. A wireless network is installed throughout the building for wireless Internet access. -
2006-2007
Students and staff travel to Italy for the first Xaverian Pilgrimage to Italy (XPI). This two-week trip to Italy gives students the opportunity to experience firsthand the center of Catholicism, by traveling to Rome and the Vatican and staying with a community of Augustinians in San Gimignano. -
March 11, 2009
Dennis Crowley ’94, co-creator and sole owner, launches Foursquare, a location-based social networking website for mobile devices -
2011-2012
The X-Men starts, Xaverian’s Acapella group -
June 2013
Campus improvements officially begin. They include a new 32,500 square-foot Scholastic and Wellness Center, an additional classroom wing with science labs, new and renovated athletic facilities and fields, and additional parking -
September 2013
The renovation to the varsity track and field, along with an eight-lane track, state-of-the- art turf, and lights, is completed. The first game under the lights was played by the varsity soccer team on September 21 and the first varsity football game under the lights was played on October 18. -
September 2013
Xaverian begins the 2013-2014 school year, kicking off the year-long 50th Anniversary celebration of Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood. Cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley, OFM Cap., celebrates Xaverian’s 50th Anniversary Mass on September 20. -
October 28, 2013
Xaverian holds a ceremonial groundbreaking to officially launch the campus improvements. -

"Called to Lead: The Campaign for Xaverian" publicly launches at the 50th Anniversary Gala -
September 2014
The Francis Xavier Division (FXD) for boys in grades 7 and 8 opens -

The 32,500 square foot Wellness Center opens -

The Ryken Wing renovations to Counseling, Admissions, and Advancement are revealed as school opens, as well as the renovated Ruth Kennedy Library -

The Josephine M. Noble Chapel renovations are completed -

The conclusion and success of the "Called to Lead" capital campaign is announced at the Francis Xavier Society reception -

The central staircase gets a face-lift -
July 2019
The Strengthening Minds, Empowering Creativity fundraising initiative allows for a new sound and lighting system to be installed in the theater. -
December 2019
After former Headmaster, Brother Daniel Skala, C.F.X. is elected General Superior of the Congregation of St. Francis Xavier, Dr. Jacob A. Conca ’94 is appointed the first lay Head of School by the Board of Trustees. -
March 2020
Xaverian’s remote education and learning program (REAL/X) was launched on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. -
September 2020
Xaverian officially opened the X-Ploration Center, a multi-purpose space which provides teachers and students with the opportunity to engage in project-based learning through design, creation, and experimentation. -
June 2021
Xaverian appoints first ever Director of the Office of Community, Culture, and Equity, Mr. Anif McDonald ’12

The Ryken Award
The Ryken Award is given annually to a Xaverian faculty or staff member who is nominated by their coworkers. This special award was established in 1993 to recognize the recipient’s commitment to the vision of Theodore Ryken, founder of the Xaverian Brothers, and to honor their dedication to the core values of Xaverian Brothers education. It is the highest award bestowed to an adult member of the Xaverian community.
