Olympic Hopefuls

Two Hawks competed in the USA Olympic Trials this summer.

Xaverian celebrated not just one, but TWO of our Hawks competing in the USA Olympic Trials this summer. In June, both William Mulgrew ’25 and Thomas Hagar ’23 traveled to Indianapolis to compete at Lucas Oil Stadium, vying for spots on the USA Swimming Olympic team.

Tommy qualified and raced in the 100 and 200 backstroke, as well as the 200 IM. In the 200 backstroke, he went from the 56th seed to the 4th in his heat, giving him an opportunity to make it to the semifinals where he came in 10th overall in front of a record-breaking crowd. Tommy is a sophomore at the University of Alabama, a member of the Crimson Tide swim team, and majoring in engineering.

Will qualified for the 400, 800, and 1500 freestyle, and made it all the way to the finals in the 1500, racing against the best swimmers in the country. As a high school student and one of the younger swimmers in the finals, he secured a 7th place finish with a time of 15:17.62. Though it was not enough to qualify for the Olympics (only the top two swimmers advance), it was an exceptional performance that secured a spot for Will on USA Swimming’s roster for the 2024 Junior Pan Pacific Championship, an international competition in Australia. Will has already verbally committed to continue his swimming career at Harvard after he graduates from Xaverian in the spring. USA Swimming is sure to see more of Tommy and Will in the future, and we’ll be cheering on our Hawks from Clapboardtree Street!
